Dec. 31, 1867
Today I spent in the school room. Not feeling very well the day and I was glad when I got through
with my task. It is snowing pretty sharp since dark and the wind is swirling around the house and reminding me of all and also reminding me that one year ago I was at J ot P L's working patching The yearbefore me never to return.

Jan 1 1868
Today I spent in the school room and the day passed slowly by. I'm looking back over the year that is passed and gone. I see many improfections in my life and in entering upon the duties of another year

Jan 2
Today passed slowly by and the duties of the school room were preformed as a task rather than a pleasure. This evening I spent reading a book entitled Conquest and self Conquest in which I became deeply interested. The sorrow which the last night of the old year shows signes of dispearing.

Jan 3
A mild pleasant day and the snow has been dispearing fast. I almost dread to see it go. I spent the day in the school room and I am glad to be released from its duty for a couple of days. And will hail the day with gladness when I can again say that I am free.

Jan 4
Today I spent partly studying and sitting around. Rode out to Mr.Connells and got two copies of the Phrenological journal panses Aoland since I have been reading since dark. There is a great deal of interest connected with writtings of this journal. Much to stipulate to a line of study.

Jan 5
Today has been very pleasant. Very unlike a winter day. I spent the day at home writting and reading. I wrote a letter to Mary LeFever also three other letters to editors of different papers. Tomarrow I go to my school again in hopes that the week will pass away pleasantly then last.

Jan 6
A steady days rain which rendered the school room rather gloomy as the cheerless aspect without appeared to cast a cloud over the minds of the pupils. We met at candle light to practice writting under the supervision of W.Kilpatrick.

Today has been a gloomy day. Dark clouds have gathered over the horizon and occasionally shed the tears of repentence as it were that their mission is one that carries so much gloom into the human heart but some days must be dark and dreary. I wrote a letter this evening for Mr. A. ?

A pleasant day with the exception of some snow flying thru the air which rendered it disagreeable to be out. But it was so warm that the snow melted as it feel j considerabley. Taught school and returned to E.K. a little disprited and discouraged.

Jan 9
A very cold day and the time passed away. Somewhat pleasanter in the school room. The scholars appeared lessened and were more inclined to obedience than for several days but still it considerable of a task to do justice to a large school

Jan 10
The weather is still severe. And i believe itto be the coldest day wehave had this winter. I taught school as usual and after school walked home with the lively hope of receiving a letter from a friend whom I esteem very highly but I was disappointed very much in my expectations.

Jan 11
A very cold day and cloudy, This afternoon I went out to Mr. Nolands and from there to a writting school at the Valley. After I got home I spent and hour or two reading in the Phrenologyical Journal in which I was very much interested.

Jan 12
The weather is moderating some. And the sun which has been obscured by the clouds the most of the time for several days. Has broken forth in its splended and magnificence. This evening I went to Mr. Bonhams and from there to meeting to the school house to hear Mr Walters preach.

Jan 13
Rather a pleasant day which I spent in the schoolroom with upwards of 40 scholars and I feel somewhat tired this evening. I went to the school house at early candlelight to hear Mr. Walters preach. And I learned from him Jennie Miller and Mr. Swineheart are married at last Joy to them I say.

Jan 14
A stormy day snow. This evening experienced rain alittle. I went to the writing school this evening and at nine o'clock returned for the nite. One day added to the past and the privilege which it brought have passed by never to return.

Jan 15
Today has been most clear and the sun came streaming through the windows of the schoolhouse. It awakened pleasing thoughts. I recieved three letters this morning. One from Emma A. Marv E. and one from ? I perused them ??????(unreadable)

Jan 16
Another day has run its round and the privileges which it ushered into existence have departed forever and the duties of the school room rested heavily upon me but they are performed however imperfectly. They must so remain forever. It has been c1ear and cold today.

Jan 17
Today is cold and I feel relieve of a heavy charge when four o'clock came. I walked home after school. Life is made up of pleasing tasks and those which are not so inviting but we must perform all that when time with us is no longer we can look back and feel we have done our duty.

Jan 18
Has been snowing some today but not enough to make sleighing. This afternoon I walked down to see Aunt Martha and P.C. came home about dark and spent the evening reading. Not feeling very well went to bed very early and after studing a short time fell asleep.

Jan 19
Been at home all day and spent part of the time writing to E. A. In answer to a letter received the fifteenth. The weather is moderating some. It is getting late and feeling tired and shall retire.

Jan 20
Taught school today. I was very throng and the day passed wearily by but evening came at last and I felt relieved.
I went to Mr McDonalds after school and spent a very pleasant evening. About eight o'clock I went to Mr. Bonhams. It snowed nearly all day and melted as fast as it fell

Jan 21
This morning I had a difficult dash to get to the school house the snow was so deep. It is the deepest snow we have had this winter. I had a small school today, only about 20 scholars and my task was quite easy to what it sometimes is.

Jan 22
A pleasant day overhead, but not very pleasant getting around of the snow being so deep. I am at Mr. Bonham and we have been passing pleasantly singing songs and tearing around generally. Half past nine and retire.

Jan 23
This had been a very warm day and the snow has disappeared very fast and what is left is very mushy. Eight o'clock the wind is whistling without and I think before morning there will be considerable change in the atmosphere. I had a school of about 30 scholars today.

Jan 24
A real change has taken place in the atmosphere since yesterday and the water which was standing on the ground was converted into ice. After school I walked down to Aunt Marthas ? and home about dark. Received a letter from R.C. - Cone Howell, Lewis Cox A.P.C. Spent the evening here and we played till ten o'clock.

Jan 25
The weather is moderating some About 3 o'clock I went out at Mr Nolands to get my hair cut. Stayed until nine o'clock and came home. Read awhile in the Phren Journal in which
I take great pleasure and I begin to think that it was a science and should be ? ?

Jan 26
A cloudy day with ? low. I went to town to Uncle Ed Cone and spent the day very pleasantly. I came home about six 0' clock and read some in the Phren Journal. Went to bed about nine o'clock.

Jan 27
Rather a cold day which I spent in the school room under rather dissagreeable circumstances. As one of my scholars Miss M.C. concluded she would rebel against the rules of the school but she concluded she had better give it up as she left and carne back with a favorable report from the directors.

Jan 28
A pleasant winter day. Had a little squall in the morning with one of the scholars after which the day passed off pleasantly. Attended writing school in the evening at the school house.

Jan 29
Today I closed my school owing to the fact that the directors were not willing to ? me with my efforts to keep good order in the school and were more ready to speak against me that for me in the presence of the school. A cold and ?

Jan 30
A very cold day. I went to Dresden and it seemed odd to be released from the duties of the school room. Yet I feel perfectly satisfied with the coarse I have taken and would not recall the words if I could.

Jan 31
The weather is not exactly pleasant. I have been at home today. Reading some. Wrote a letter to Mrs. R.C. in answer to one received the 24th. I was at Uncle J. Howells this evening.

Feb 1
A fair day Tolerably cold I spent the day writing and reading. In the evening Hamlin and I hitched ? to the sleigh and drove down to the crossroads. There was quite a company of boys and we had a gay time playing the violin.

Feb 2
This forenoon was clear and showed some signs of thawing but it turned colder about noon and clouded over and has been quite blustery since. Snowing and blowing. Went down to the Valley this evening to hear H Auld sing and had a very pleasant ride.

Feb 3
A very wet day I spent at home excepting an hour or two in the evening. I made out my school report and went down to Mr. McDonalds to get an order. I have felt very unwell all day. Time passes very slowly.

Feb 4
Considerable change in the weather The sun shines brightly and the snow shows signs of disappearing. Wrote a letter this morning to Mr C The balance of the day I helped haul wood and I ? outdoor exercise Leaves me feeling well

Feb 5
A pleasant morning It showed signs of a winter day and about ten ? ? clouded up and commenced getting coldr. Moderated some in the afternoon I went to Dresden today with Uncle J H We got home about sundown.

Feb 6
A very cold day which I spent mostly by the fire this evening Went down to Levi (?) Thompsons this evening to get an order for my school money Found it a very cold ride. Time passes slowly and I look forward to the time of my aquaintances again.

Feb 7
I went down to Mrs. Cones this morning and stayed nearly all day I read some and the day passed away quite pleasantly to me I received three letters one from sister Mary one from R C and one from Lizzie Doney Yet I was considerably dissapointed for I expected another.

Feb 8
This forenoon I was helping haul wood A tolerable cold day and it is showing signs of a storm again I have been reading some this afternoon and this evening I feel alittle lonesome I expected to spend this evening with a friend (R C) but am very much dissapointed

Feb 9
Commenced raining sometime last nite and had been raining all this forenoon but it turned to snow this afternoon and has been snowing very fitfully I have been at home all day Wrote a letter to sister Mary also S Sewell Chicago

Feb 10
Left home this morning about ten o'clock for Indiana Took the train from Frazeyburg at half past one and am now (8 o'clock) within three miles of Colombus where we have been for the last hour waiting for trains to pass going east and hoping it will not be long before we will start

We arrived at Columbus last nite ten o'c left for Cincinati at one o'c am
and arrived there seven o'c am Took the train for Dillsborough seven forty
am arrived there between nine and ten or rather at the Walltionfor (?) and had
to walk about a mile and a half over as rough a road as I have seen lately
and by hiring a sleigh I have got within two and one half miles of my
destination For a day or two spent a pleasant evening

Feb 12
I arrived at Mr. Arford about five o'c Accompanied Miss Phoebe Arford to a spelling
school and from ten o'c until one o'c I spent with her alone and left there
this morning and walked from Dills to the station this evening and am now (nine o'c) at Seymore where I will have to remain until two o'c in the morning Time passes slowly when I have to wait.

Feb 13
Left Seymore this morning at two o'c for Mitchell and arrived there about 4 o'c
Had to lay by there until 12 o'c Arrived. in Bloomington 2/m o'c I feel alittle
depressed in spirit from my dissapointment in meeting a friend but my hopes of seeing my relative tomorrow evening is cheering and I anticipate a pleasant time We have had a very pleasant day

I left Bloomington this morning on the Hackni (?) accompanied with a young lady
Miss Sarah Griffin and arrived at BLoomfield Indiana about four o'c Walked out to
about four miles and borrowed a horse and arrived at my uncles a little after dark and was much surprised to meet Uncle Gilmore and Aunt Rachel Howell

Feb 15
A very pleasant day and one that it will be a pleasure to remember as I have been
enjoying the suerety of my friends Time passes pleasantly by and the thought of
mingling with those we love is sufficient to banish care and awaken the desire that we may meet in heaven

Feb 16
A very pleasant day and the warm rays of the sun is drawing the frost out of the
ground very fast The time passes very pleasantly with me We have had company
today and I have become acquainted with several since my arrival

Feb 17
Time passes so pleasantly with me that I do not think of getting lonesome and the pleasure of mingling with those I have long regarded as true friends is a priveledge that I esteem very highly Today has been very pleasant overhead but dissagreeable to get around on account of the muck

Feb 18
I have felt quite unwell all day and had it not been for the agreeable company of my friends I would have occupied the bed a portion of the time I accompanied my cousins Lizzie L and Phebe Doney to Mr. Kings and enjoyed an evening the evening as well as I could expect

Feb 19
I feel much better today and I think that I will feel as well as ever Today has been a very fine day and I begin to feel alittle like I have the spring fever But I will I think I will get over that soon

Feb 20
Today has been cloudy and shows signs of rain Lizzie Phebe and Miss Emery and I took a horseback ride this morning to see cousin Susan We arrived there about noon and the day passed away pleasantly I enjoyed myself very much

Feb 21
A pleasant day The warm rays of the sun is awakening emotions of praise among the feathery inhabitants of the air and they carol forth their sweet songs in thankfulness that they have survived the cold and wintery blasts and that they are left to cheer with songs of thankfulness

Feb 22
I am spending my time very pleasantly and although I am reminded of the the fact that I must soon bid adieu to the friends that I am with to mingle with other society Perhaps as pleasing yet and am pleased to think that we can recall the scenes that we passed thru

Feb 23
A very pleasant day which I spent at Uncle Hugh Doney A number of young folks came in and
we spent the time pleasantly. I accompanied Isaac to the river on his way back to his school. The evening passed pleasantly by.

Feb 24
A cloudy day and this morning I thought we would have rain but it broke away this afternoon and the sun shone out as though it was trying to revive the beauties of nature. Lizzie and I have been visiting at N R Dobbs and we had a very pleasant visit and I enjoyed the ride home very much.

Feb 25
A cloudy day. I feel very dull and stupid today and I spent about an hour and a half sleeping. Lizzie Phebe and I have been singing some since dark. The time passed so pleasantly that ten o'c is here and I must retire for the night as I do not wish to impose and good nature by keeping my cousin up longer.

Feb 26
A dull cloudy day with some rain. I have enjoyed myself very well today and as the time draws near that I must bid adieu to the loved friend with whom I have been associating for the past two weeks. It is calculated to cast a gloom over my spirit.

Feb 27
A dull cloudy day and very cold with some snow. I have not felt very well today. This evening Miss King and Miss Emezy were here at my uncles and we had a gay time. The order of the evening would be too tedious to write out and twelve o'c came rather soon for us so we sat up until two o'c.

Feb 28
A clear day. Considerably warmer than yesterday. I wrote a letter to mother this forenoon and went to Scotland this afternoon. Lizzie, Phebe, James, Rose and I went to Mr Emerys to spend the evening Had a plesant visit Came home about one 0' c. Had a pleasant chat and then returned for a little sleep.

Feb 29
This morning clear, but it clouded up before noon. I took a good sleep on the? this afternoon at my uncles and am much refreshed Today closes another month and as the
shades of night is spread over all nature it is a pleasure to revue the past and I feel that my lot is cast in such pleasant? been visiting at N R Dobbs and we had a very pleasant visit and I enjoyed the ride home very much
